Overcoming Overcrowding

Dauphin County Prison

Dauphin County PrisonDauphin County Prison, located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a medium-security facility housing 600 inmates. As with many prisons nationwide, Dauphin County was experiencing overcrowding due to an increase in incarceration rates and stiffer sentencing procedures. Inmates housed at Dauphin County Prison are typically awaiting sentencing, trial dates or are serving short-term sentences. In addition to its predominantly male population, Dauphin County also houses 70 female inmates.

When Dauphin County Prison needed dormitory and dayroom space for 200 inmates, they took an imaginative approach and called on ModSpace. ModSpace supplied two dormitories, a large dayroom and an administrative addition at the Harrisburg facility. In addition, a modular guard station was supplied outside the modular complex as part of the Dauphin County security system. ModSpace can quickly respond to customer needs with a cost-effective solution to expansion plans and, for Dauphin County, provided a 20,000-square foot white aluminum-sided building. The three interconnected modulars were on-site and ready for occupancy within three months from the date of order.

The two new modular dormitories are each equipped to handle 100 inmates. Each of the four-man dorm areas features half-high partitions, which provide a sense of limited privacy without compromising security. Each dorm is equipped with a restroom module and laundry facilities. A control center is located in each dorm so that correctional officers can monitor inmate behavior. The dayroom and administrative building features a large central area with 4 classrooms and 11 adjoining offices. Inmates occupying the modular facility are beginning pre-release program training and will receive instructions and counseling prior to release.

ModSpace custom designed Dauphin County Prison's buildings to withstand the rigors of institutional living. Project details included 8-foot ceilings with R-19 roof insulation, R-11 in the walls and R-28 in the floors. The environmental systems include fire and security alarms, heat detectors, fluorescent day and night lighting, 36,000 BTUs of air conditioning and 44,000 BTUs gas heating systems in each module. Commercial grade steel doors, panic hardware, and a sprinkler system provide additional safety features in each building. The exterior is finished in white aluminum siding, with polycarbonate security windows capped with aluminum frames. ModSpace also provided site services for Dauphin County including handicapped-equipped ramps, electrical and plumbing connections, and foundations.
